POSITION SUMMARY: The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment at an operating quarry by performing the following functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – other duties may be assigned:

  1. Operate heavy equipment of various types used in mining operations, such as Cat 992 loaders, Cat 245 excavators and Euclid R50 dump trucks.
  2. Load and unload company and commercial trucks.
  3. Maintain block yard organization.
  4. Transport production blocks, waste material and equipment as required.
  5. Properly follow company and MSHA safety procedures. Bring equipment/safety problems to the attention of the mining supervisor, quarry mechanic or Safety Director.
  6. Follow daily procedures and protocols as required by the chief mechanic and mining supervisor.
  7. Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor; clean equipment.
  8. Assist in training of new employees performing the maintenance and repair duties, as required or assigned. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE This position requires a valid driver’s license and at least two years in the operation of heavy construction equipment. A CDL endorsement is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb ladders up to 25 feet tall, balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Lifts over that amount will be assisted mechanically or with the help of another employee.

WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and moving mechanical parts and equipment. The employee may be occasionally exposed to high places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
