Granite
and some of the similar stones are very unique materials in
terms of their physical properties. Basically they are very
thermally stable, which means they change very slowly with
changes in temperature compared to other materials, particularly
metals. They are very hard, giving them excellent resistance
to wear. Because they are inert they do not require any type
of coating (paint, plating, anodizing, etc.) for protection
like most metals do. Due to the combination of these and other
physical properties these stone materials can be manufactured
to very small critical geometry tolerances. These stone materials
are also excellent vibration absorbers.
We currently offer four materials for precision products:
Impala (from South Africa), Zimbabwe (also from South Africa),
our local Barre Gray Granite, and Salisbury Pink Granite (from
North Carolina). Physical properties relevant to precision
use vary significantly between these materials. Many physical
properties need to be considered in determining the appropriate
material for your application. This is best initiated with
a phone conversation with Michael Caputo, perhaps followed
at some point with a visit.
